Hop

Hop is a dioicous bine, i.e. male and female flowers develop on separate plants. Its natural sites include nutrient-rich alluvial forests. Hop, the „Medicinal Plant of the year 2007“, is cultivated since the 9th century. Only the female hop cones are used for cure and brewing beer. They contain bitter agents, which have sedative, sleep-inducing (hynagogic) and antibacterial effects and act against digestive disorders and diminished appetite. Another constituent, xanthohumol, is presently in the focus of cancer research due to its cytoprotective activities.
